Over 10 Hooghly ghats to light up for Modi’s 25 years in public life
Times of India | 12 September 2026An SPM Port official said Baja Kadamtala Ghat, one of the largest ghats along the Hooghly, will alone be decorated with 1 lakh lights. “The lights will be switched on from 6pm,” said an official.
Other ghats to be illuminated include Ma er Ghat, Kumartuli Ghat, Nimtala Ghat, Armenian Ghat, Chotelal Ki Ghat, Doighat, Suriname Ghat, Mullick Ghat, Babughat, Jagannath Ghat and Judges Ghat.
While some natural diyas will be lit as a symbolic measure, the ghats will largely be illuminated with LED lamps and battery-operated lights. Officials said the use of natural diyas along the riverbank would not be environment-friendly and their number would therefore be restricted.
“The more detailed plan will be available in a day or two. We will possibly have joint coordination meetings with the port authorities. We have already conducted joint inspections of some of the ghats to check their cleanliness and if the ghats require some repairs ahead of the event,” said a KMC official.
CM Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday announced that the Bengal govt would observe Modi’s 25 years in public life with a “Seva Sankalp Abhiyan”, under which more than 1 crore diyas will be lit across the state on Sept 17.
“First as chief minister of Gujarat and then as Prime Minister, Narendra Modi will complete his 25 years in public life on Oct 7. Like other states, we have also decided to celebrate this occasion. On Sept 17 after sunset, we will hold the ‘Ashirbadon ki Diya’ programme, under which more than 1 crore families will participate,” Adhikari said after chairing a preparatory meeting with ministers, MLAs and officers at Nabanna.
Various govt and heritage buildings, including Nabanna, Victoria Memorial Hall and Writers’ Buildings, as well as religious places such as Kalighat Temple, will also be illuminated.
