Kolkata: Left Front on Saturday announced candidates for Oct 6 Bengal byelections, matching Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s nominee approvals for Rejinagar and Nandigram.
In Rejinagar, CPM functionary Syed Asad Ali — who briefly joined TMC and Congress before returning — faces Congress candidate Mohd Abdullahil Kafi. For Nandigram, CPI retained 2026 candidate Shantigopal Giri against Congress’s Milan Pradhan.
EC scheduled Oct 9 for counting.
Nandigram byelection follows chief minister Suvendu Adhikari vacating it for Bhowanipore. Rejinagar fell vacant after Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) founder Humayun Kabir resigned to retain Nowda.
Criticising the state govt, Bengal Congress president Shubhankar Sarkar said, “The chief minister should have retained Nandigram seat. No work has been done in Nandigram so far.”
Rebel TMC spokesperson Riju Dutta said factions won’t field candidates if Mamata Banerjee contests Nandigram.
