Med council faces dissolution demand over fake doc scam

Kolkata: A renewed demand for dissolving the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) has surfaced after Association of Private Hospital and Nursing Home (APHNH) accused the council of providing licences to doctors who had fake degrees. One of them is allegedly working as a gynaecologist in Burdwan and the other as a general surgeon in North 24 Parganas. Various doctors’ organisations have also demanded a thorough probe into the issue.
“We have lodged a complaint with the health minister about these two persons with documents that we could collect and which suggest that they have obtained the registration numbers by providing fake medical degree certificates from other states. We feel there is a bigger scam operating where WBMC has provided registration without proper verification,” said Rajiv Pandey, secretary, APHNH.
“We demand a judicial enquiry into this allegation,” said Sajal Biswas, general secretary, Service Doctors Forum.
On Thursday, some doctors from APHNH staged a protest in front of WBMC’s office in Salt Lake, demanding resignation of members, including that of council president Sudipto Roy.
