  • KOLKATA: Thursday evening’s double nor’wester squalls did little to curb the rising heat and Friday’s real feel temperature soared between 49°C and 53°C, over 10 degrees above the actual maximum temperature of 36.1°C. Friday’s maximum temperature was 3 notches above that of Thursday, which was 33.3°C.

Friday evening’s thundershower, however, brought some relief for citizens.

According to private weather forecasting agency, Accuweather, the real feel temperature for a person standing in shade was 49°C on Friday while the real feel for the one standing in the sun was 53°C.

The thundershower with lightning on Friday evening is unlikely to have a significant impact on the temperature for Saturday. Weathermen at the Alipore Met office said the rainfall is unlikely until chances for enhanced thunderstorms increase again from May 22 to May 25.

Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director G K Das said, “There may be a weather system related to a trough developing over Jharkhand from Monday. Currently, there is a lot of moisture in the atmosphere making the conditions favourable for more thundershowers.”

The double squall on Thursday night produced over 19mm of rainfall recorded at Alipore. It was the largest single incident of precipitation in the month.

Prior to that, a double squall had produced about 15mm of rainfall, recorded at Alipore, last Monday.

While May typically has 10 days of thunderstorms, there is probability of at least five to six more thundershowers until the end of the month.
