  • METRO ROUTES

    Green Line or EW Metro (Esplanade-Howrah Maidan) | This 4.8km stretch is due for completion in Feb 2024 Green Line or EW Metro (Sealdah-Howrah Maidan) | This 7.2km section is due for completion in June 2024

    Orange Line’s Phase 1 | New Garia-Ruby (Kavi Subhas-Hemanta Mukherjee) — this 5.4km stretch is due for completion in Jan 2024

    Orange Line’s Phase 2 | New Garia-Metropolitan Line is due for completion in March 2024

    Purple Line (Taratala-Majerhat) | Due in Jan 2024

    WATER SUPPLY

    Work for augmentation of Dhapa water treatment plant to begin in 2024.Also, KMC will start construction for Garia water treatment plant. Construction of a water reservoir-cum-booster pumping station near College Street market will also begin in 2024. Together, KMC will need to spend Rs 400 crore on these projects

    AIRPORT

    Kolkata airport is going for a mini expansion in 2024. The ₹130-crore work on expanding the integrated terminal building capacity from 26 million passengers a year to 28 million will start next year. The work on increasing the airport’s flight handling capacity has already been completed and is scheduled to be commissioned in the first week of January. Four new taxiways, including one for aircraft to roll into the primary runway for take-off and three others to quickly exit the runway after landing, will help increase the airport’s flight handling capacity from 35 an hour now to 45 flights

    SKYWALK/FOB

    The ₹100cr Kalighat skywalk project that started in 2019 is expected to be ready in May 2024. Another infra project to be inaugurated in 2024 is the foot overbridge at Ghoshpara off EM Bypass near Patuli. The 45m FOB may be inaugurated in January

    HEALTHCARE

    At least 500 beds are to be added for cancer care and several hundred more for multiple other specialities across several private hospitals in Kolkata, including Ruby General Hospital, Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Woodlands Multispecialty Hospital, Narayana Hospitals and BP Poddar Hospital

    GREENER TRANSPORT

    Amid the crisis of public transport in the city due to phasing out of old buses, the silver lining is a fleet of nearly 1,100 electric buses which are supposed to hit the streets in 2024

    LESS MESSY SKYLINE

    Installation of underground cable ducts along 15 major thoroughfares is likely to be over in 2024. Work has already been done along three major stretches

    BETTER WEATHER FORECAST

    The IMD has signed two MoUs for the installation of two brand new Doppler weather radars in Malda and Diamond Harbour in 2024. The X-Band Radar to be installed at Diamond Harbour Women’s University will be able to cover a 100km radius covering Greater Kolkata and the entire adjoining coastal area. The C-Band radar, to be installed at the ICARCentral Institute of Subtropical Horticulture, Regional Research Station Malda, will cover a 350-400km radius. The C-Band was decided with the aim of improving forecasts for agriculture in north Bengal and aid public policy in areas like public safely and impact assessment
