• Kolkata Police: Over 390 caught ‘drunk driving’ between Christmas and New Year’s eve

  • Over 16,000 persons were caught by law enforcement authorities in Kolkata for illegal parking between Christmas (Monday) and New Year’s eve (Sunday), police said on Monday.

    According to officials, 16,883 persons were prosecuted for illegal parking in the state capital during the six-day period.

    Kolkata Police arrested many persons on New Year’s Eve for their alleged involvement in various crimes – ranging from disorderly conduct to drunk driving, and violation of traffic norms, said a senior police officer.

    As crowds thronged to popular attractions in the city on Sunday, security was beefed up to maintain law and order.

    Sources said police caught 391 people driving under the influence of alcohol between Christmas and New Year’s Eve in the city and confiscated 48.6 liters of liquor. Of them, 89 were arrested.

    Police also arrested 457 persons from different parts of Kolkata for “disorderly conduct” on December 31 . Police had arrested 335 persons for disorderly conduct in Kolkata on the last day of 2023.

    As far as traffic violations go, 1,570 persons were caught flouting rules during the festivities, police said. Of the 1570, at least 770 were prosecuted for riding without helmets. Among the 311 prosecuted for rash driving, 93 were arrested. In addition, 7,386 persons were prosecuted for signal violation.
