  • Kolkata: Bengal registered 13 new Covid cases on Monday, two days after the state had logged 17 cases. The number of active cases across Bengal has now rose to 70 from 57 on Saturday.

Even though cases are rising, state health officials believe it is not yet alarming since infections are mild. They have instructed all hospitals to collect samples of patients and send them for genome sequencing to check if any belongs to the new JN.1 variant. The health department had sent 30 samples to NIBG, Kalyani but none tested positive of the new variant. “More samples are being collected and will be sent for test. Rise in cases is slow so far,” said an official.
