• Max temp starts falling, may dip more after Friday

  • Kolkata: The maximum temperature has begun dipping again, falling over two notches below normal for the first time in over a week.

By Monday, the maximum temperature fell to 23.2° Celsius, from 24.6° Celsius on Sunday. For most of last week, the temperature remained stable at 26.4° Celsius, which is about a degree above normal for December. On the other hand, the minimum temperature too has started falling. From last week’s highest of 17.6° Celsius, it fell to 16.2° Celsius on Monday.

After the cyclonic circulation off the Bangladesh coast moved towards the northwest Bay of Bengal, the warm easterly winds that had been prevailing over the city last week changed its course, making way for cold northwesterly winds to enter the city again, reducing both the maximum and minimum temperatures.

“There is still a thick band of fog over Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, blocking the cold winds from entering,” said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director GK Das. “By January 5, the fog will have most likely cleared, allowing the cold winds to enter, reducing the temperature. Some of Kolkata’s neighbouring districts may also receive some rainfall by that time,” he added.

From Tuesday, there may be a slight fog in the morning, replaced by sunny, clear skies for most of the day. On Tuesday, the maximum and minimum temperatures may start dipping further. The minimum temperature on Tuesday and Wednesday is likely to be 15° Celsius, a notch below that of Monday. The maximum temperature too is likely to remain between 23 and 24° Celsius.
