• New criminal laws draconian: Adhir

  • West Bengal Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Tuesday termed as “draconian” the new set of laws replacing the Indian Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

Addressing a press conference at the party office in Kolkata, the Congress MP from Bahrampur said, “These laws were passed in Parliament in a dictatorial manner. They are inhuman. For instance, a truck driver involved in an accident will be punished under the new law without investigating the reasons. The new law can also land one in jail or they can be hanged for marrying someone, saying they married cleverly. Can a government keep a watch if two people get married out of love or otherwise? This new system is full of complications. These laws are anti-people. To pass these Bills they expelled 141 MPs just to keep them out of Parliament.”

He slammed the TMC government over ration strike and blamed the party for the “collapse” of the ration distribution system in state. Chowdhury accused the TMC and the BJP of having a “mutual understanding”. The Trinamool, he alleged, is full of corruption which has turned into a cancer. “They have no solution to this. The TMC’s decline has started at a fast pace,” he said.
