  • Kolkata: A 43-year-old woman from North 24 Parganas, Farida Bibi, died of dengue in a city hospital on Sunday night. Hospital sources said the deceased had several comorbidities that contributed to her death. Health officials said dengue was under control but it was not unusual for a few stray cases to be reported.

Sources said when Farida, a resident of Deganga, was brought to ID Hospital on Saturday, her condition was already critical. The homemaker was earlier admitted to a local hospital where her blood samples tested positive for dengue. The patient succumbed to the infection the next day in the ICU.

The vector-borne disease had caused havoc with the state witnessing the sharpest outbreak in recent years in July and October in 2023. Dengue cases started appearing towards June end after the arrival of the monsoon with the numbers surging from mid-July. Last year, the state’s rural areas saw a higher surge than urban areas. Though there is no surge now, hospitals are getting stray cases of dengue and malaria.
