  • Kolkata: A mother dog and her two puppies, trapped between the walls of an abandoned factory and a house in Tangra, were brought out to safety in a three-hour-long operation on Tuesday. It was a concerted effort of a seven-member team from the KMC’s public safety wing that saved the dogs.

It was an a difficult exercise as the mother’s head was stuck between two walls and any attempt at pulling her up with the help of a lasso could have injured her grievously, said Rajib Ghosh, a KMC health department employee who led the team.

Around noon, a resident of Gholpara in Tangra called up KMC’s Dhapa dog pound, telling them that a dog was trapped and needed help. When a three-member team visited to inspect the spot, they found the dog precariously trapped between the walls of the factory and a residential building. Realising that rescue would not be easy as the rickety walls could collapse and endanger the lives of the dog as well as the rescuers, they sought help from the headquarters.

A second team reached the spot around 2pm and resumed the operation. “We couldn’t approach the dog from either direction, fearing the extreme vulnerability of the walls. Finally, we decided to demolish parts of the wall from the factory side and take out the frightened dog,” said Ghosh. Among the others on the team were Haripada Halder, Biswajit Mondal, Rohit Singh and Sabyasachi Panda. When Halder tried to reach the dog, he found the dog sitting with two puppies beside her.

The second phase of the operation began after rescuing the mother.

“The team could finally rescue the two-year-old mother and her puppies late in the afternoon. We brought the mother and her puppies to the Dhapa dog pound for a health check-up. We need to take care of the mother, who is traumatised. We are keeping a watch on the puppies, too,” said Ghosh.
