  • Kolkata: The KP cyber cell arrested a 27-year-old man near Mandideep, 23km from Bhopal, on Wednesday for allegedly cheating an Army personnel from Fort William of Rs 11 lakh by offering him high returns and expensive gifts like i-Phones. Accused Raj Singh Pal had contacted the victim through the Telegram app. The police team is expected to reach Kolkata by Thursday night.

The account that Pal held in his name was blocked by both Delhi and Tamil Nadu cops earlier, as well as by the Kolkata cyber PS. There was around Rs 6 lakh in it when this account was blocked, said cops. Arrests have also been made by joint police teams in Gujarat in this regard, the Delhi Police said.

The police also arrested Anirudha Chowdhury (38) for allegedly duping Sushanta Sil, a resident of Shyampukur in north Kolkata, of Rs 5.6 lakh on July 24. The cops said the victim was offered a work-from-home job through multiple Telegram app groups.

In both cases, cops said the accused used social media to influence the victim. In one case, it was about earning in the WFH mode by liking videos, in the other, the accused induced the victim to pay by communicating through fake profiles.
