  • DALIT WRITER and TMC MLA Manoranjan Byapari’s office in Hooghly’s Balagarh was allegedly vandalised on Thursday. The incident took place a day after Byapari accused local leaders of his own party of engaging in “corruption and unethical activities” in his Assembly constituency in Hooghly district, police said, adding that an FIR has been registered.

On Wednesday, the Balagarh legislator alleged that he was facing life threat from TMC Zilla Parishad member Runa Khatun and her husband Arijit Das. He also said that he won’t visit his constituency until he gets security cover. However, Khatun and Das have denied all the allegations.

Speaking to mediapersons on the “vandalism” of his office, the TMC MLA said, “I will never say anything against party chairperson Mamata Banerjee. I raised my voice against those few small party workers who consider themselves big leaders and were misusing their power.  They are angry and resorted to vandalising my office after I spoke out against their corrupt and unethical practices in my constituency.”

Byapari also targeted Khatun and her husband, who is also a TMC leader, for allegedly “indulging in corrupt practices”. He alleged that despite knowing everything, the party was not taking any action against the two.

“My office was vandalised and we have filed an FIR on the matter. Let’s see what happens now. My party leadership has asked me not to visit Balagarh constituency as of now. I will abide by the directive of my party,” said Byapari.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Byapari said certain leaders in his constituency are indulging in “unethical practices.” He also protested against illegal sand mining and irregularities in the public distribution system by a section of my party leaders.

Meanwhile, TMC Hooghly Zilla Parishad member

Runa Khatun denied such allegations and filed a complaint against Byapari at Balagarh

Police Station against Byapari for making derogatory comments against her in a social media post.

“He is maligning the image of my family by making baseless allegations. He has also made derogatory comments against me in a social media post, which he later deleted. I have kept a screenshot of the post. Without any evidence, he is labelling false charges against me. I have lodged a complaint against him with the police,” said Khatun.
