• Cops eye R-Day rollout for UPI payment of traffic fine
    Times of India | 5 January 2024
  • Kolkata: Motorists across Kolkata will soon be able to make UPI (Unified Payments Interface) payments of spot traffic fines in addition to paying by cash or cards.

The Kolkata Traffic Police has launched live testing of the UPI payment facility across all 25 traffic guards and is evaluating a possible Republic Day rollout. Last year, it conducted prolonged trials at four traffic guards and trained cops in the remaining traffic guards.

Traffic cops say while card payments are already available, both motorists and sergeants find it equally cumbersome and time-consuming to conduct transactions by swiping credit and debit cards. Motorists have, in fact, been demanding the introduction of the QR-code based UPI payment that is done using phone apps.

Several cities in the country have already introduced UPI payment of traffic fines. Coimbatore Police rolled it out in 2021, Chennai Police in 2022 and Gurugram Police last year.
