• Metro passengers to experience unique light and sound effect during the under river trip

  • The long-cherished dream of an underwater metro journey beneath the river Hooghly in India is on the verge of realisation as the East-West Metro gears up to commence operations this year. Commuters traversing the East-West Metro Corridor, linking Howrah Maidan with Salt Lake Sector V, are in for a treat as they embark on a unique journey beneath the river.

The East-West Metro has successfully completed the construction of twin subaqueous tunnels, located 350 meters downstream of Rabindra Setu (Howrah Bridge). These tunnels, burrowed with the assistance of Earth Pressure Balancing Tunnel Boring Machines through predominantly stiff clayey silt, mark an engineering marvel. The rapid completion of this project within a record 66 days is a testament to the commitment and efficiency of the metro authorities.

The underwater tunnel spans an impressive 520 meters, connecting the two century-old cities of Howrah and Kolkata beneath the river Hooghly—a feat that was once considered unthinkable.

Metro authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that passengers experience a memorable journey during the approximately 45-second underwater transit. Despite the non-transparent nature of the circular bored tunnels, with internal diameters of 5.55 meters and 275 mm thick RCC segmental permanent liners, commuters will feel as though they are gliding beneath the river Hooghly.

To enhance this immersive experience, the inner walls of the tunnels will be illuminated with blue lights, creating the illusion of water surrounding the moving train. In a unique touch, 40 illuminated fishes will appear to swim alongside the train during the journey, a special arrangement curated by the internationally renowned company Phillips.

Kausik Mitra, Chief Public Relations Officer of Metro Rail, shared that the Metro Railway is considering incorporating special sound effects in this section to further elevate the uniqueness of the journey. The East-West Metro's innovative approach promises to make the underwater commute not just a convenience but a riveting and unforgettable experience for passengers.
