  • KOLKATA: As Bangladesh held a general election on Sunday, an advocate and special public prosecutor from Kolkata was part of the ten-member Commonwealth Expert Team (CET) that is in Bangladesh to witness the electoral process in the country. The lawyer-Sabyasachi Banerjee is the only Indian in the team led by Bruce Golding--the former Prime Minister of Jamaica.

Banerjee, who is a well-known face in the Calcutta high court was nominated to the team in December last year. The team was tasked with considering all aspects of the election process and providing their observations on whether the elections are conducted in line with the democratic standards to which Bangladesh has committed itself.

Apart from Banerjee, the team comprised members from former ministers, advocates and legal practitioners and members of constitutional council from 10 different countries. The CET will also be supported by staff members from the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Banerjee, an alumnus of the University of Pune, won the best student advocate of India at the Thrissur Law College, Kerala in 2000. He started his career in New Delhi before shifting to Kolkata. Banerjee is the special public prosecutor of West Bengal now. He was part of the Justice Madan Lokur panel set up by the Bengal government in 2021 to probe the Pegasus malware scam.
