• Stubble-burning menace back in New Town

  • Kolkata: Yet another incident of stubble- and biomass-burning was reported from a vacant plot adjacent to Greenwood Elements housing complex in New Town Action Area II on Sunday evening. The entire area was engulfed in smoke as locals noticed the matter and alerted the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA).

Locals said that it was around 5pm that they noticed three persons lighting up the grass on the vacant land outside the boundary wall of the housing complex.“We called them but they fled. We could have caught them if the boundary wall was not there,” said a resident.

“Biomass-burning is on in the area for the last two days. Birds are flying away as their habitat is getting destroyed. NKDA authorities have been informed about the matter,” the resident added.

Locals said that though NKDA authorities have taken preventive measures, isolated cases of stubble-burning were being reported in New Town this season, mostly in Action Area II where there are vacant plots.

NKDA officials said that they have kept a water tanker ready and are also keeping volunteers to constantly keep watch to detect and prevent such biomass-burning.

The authorities have carved out an inspection path between the vacant plots at the Central Business District (CBD) so that they can regularly enter the fields and keep a watch.
