  • The BJP on Monday filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Calcutta High Court demanding a probe by the National Investigation Agency or CBI into an attack on a team of the Enforcement Directorate in the Sandeshkhali area of West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district last Friday.

Apart from the probe, the party also demanded the arrest of absconding Trinamool Congress (TMC) strongman Sheikh Shahjahan, who allegedly orchestrated the attack on the ED officials.

The division bench of Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Supratim Bhattacharya, however, refused to grant an urgent hearing on the matter and posted it for January 11.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Advocate Susmita Saha Dutta said, “We also prayed that if necessary central paramilitary forces must be deployed in Sarberia and Basirhat areas. The High Court has posted the matter for hearing on Thursday which is a PIL day”.

On Friday, when an ED team reached Shahjahan’s residence to conduct searches in connection with the alleged ration scam, they were attacked by a large mob. Following the attack, the central agency claimed that three of its officers sustained serious injuries and their belongings were looted.

A day later, the ED issued a lookout circular against Shahjahan, following apprehensions that he might flee the country. Governor C V Ananda Bose also asked the police to arrest him immediately.

Reacting to filing of the petition, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar said, “The matter is sub judice. The court will hear it in due course.”
