  • A 27-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment by a special POCSO court in Nadia district for raping two teenaged girls.

The court on Monday held Imjamamul Haque Biswas guilty of the crime and also imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on him. According to the police, Biswas was employed as the head teacher of a coaching academy in the district where he raped the school girls, aged 15 and 14.

It was alleged that he captured their photographs when they used the common washroom and started blackmailing them to rape them. The victims claimed that after committing the crime every time, they were made to take contraceptive medicines. While one girl was raped for a year, the other underwent the ordeal for eight months, the FIR says.

Biswas repeatedly issued threats to the victims and their families even during the trial, it was alleged.

An FIR was filed by the complainants in this regard on October 10, 2022. A few months later, the victims’ parents filed an appeal in the Calcutta High Court demanding a proper investigation. Biswas was arrested on March 22, 2023, after the High Court directed the district police to quickly dispose of the case.

District public prosecutor Bibhash Chatterjee said, “The special POCSO court also directed that the victims be given a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each.”
