  • The West Bengal Police on Wednesday said they could not record the statement of an ED official in connection with the January 5 attack on a team of ED officials in Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas.

A police team, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Basirhat) Sananda Goswami, reached the ED office at CGO Complex in the Salt Lake area to record the statement of the Deputy Director of ED, who had filed the complaint with the police.

“We could not speak to the ED Deputy Director who had filed the complaint. We were informed that he was occupied,” said Goswami while leaving the ED office.

She said a notice was sent to the ED official on three occasions and this was the second time that the police team visited his office but could not speak with him.

Later in the day, another team of West Bengal Police, led by Deputy SP (Bongaon) Dipen Tamang visited the ED office. He too reportedly failed to record the statement of the ED official.

On Monday, Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar had said that strict action will be taken against those involved in an attack on ED officials. “A strong action will be taken against those who took the law into their hands. A comprehensive inquiry will be initiated against those who broke the law,” Kumar had said.

Police, meanwhile, are yet to arrest TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh, the main accused in the case.

Meanwhile, the Opposition BJP said they would gherao Nazat Police Station in North 24 Parganas on Thursday to protest against the alleged “police inaction” against Sheikh. State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar said, “The attack on ED officials means an attack on the Constitution. The BJP will not keep quiet if such attacks take place. Tomorrow (Thursday), we will hold an agitation outside Nazat police station to mark our protest. The main accused in the incident must be arrested without any delay.”
