  • BJP leaders and workers on Thursday held an agitation in North 24 Parganas district, demanding immediate arrest of Trinamool Congress strongman Sheikh Shahjahan for allegedly orchestrating an attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers on January 5.

The protesters, led by state party president Sukanta Majumdar, marched about a kilometre before staging a dharna outside the Nazat police station. Majumdar said prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC) were imposed in the area around the police station to prevent the peaceful demonstration by the BJP.

“Six days have passed since the attack on ED officers but no one has been arrested so far. Sheikh Shahjahan had planned the attack on the central investigation agency officials. He is absconding the agency with active support from the ruling party. We demand his immediate arrest,” said Majumdar. “Once the BJP comes to power in West Bengal, residences of all such TMC musclemen who terrorised the poor for last one decade will be razed to the ground by bulldozer,” Majumdar added.

Earlier, when the protesters were stopped by policemen, they tried to break the barricades. Then they squatted there and demanded to be allowed to meet the police officers. A five-member BJP delegation was allowed inside the police station.

Reacting to Majumdar’s comment, TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh said the BJP will never come to power in West Bengal. “They are staging a drama outside the Nazat police station. The BJP has lost touch with the people of Bengal. Therefore, it is their futile attempt to garner support for the party. It is clear that the BJP is using central agencies to harass its political opponents, especially the Trinamool Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. We have no objection to a fair investigation in the ED attack case,” said Ghosh.
