  • Kolkata: Maiden trials for the Joka Metro’s (Purple line) 1.2km extension to Majerhat may commence on Saturday, sources said on Friday.

Metro Railway general manager, P Uday Kumar Reddy remained tight-lipped about the trial dates, safety inspections and commissioning of the new Metro lines in the city.

The city’s Orange line or the New Garia-Airport Corridor’s truncated section from New Garia to Ruby has been made ready for launch for about a year now.About Majerhat, the GM said, “We want to start this section with signals.” “We want to run trains in the Purple (and the ready-to-be-launched Orange) lines at 5-minute intervals” Reddy said, adding that the Joka-Taratala section now logs 500 daily footfall.

The PM may flag off the extension in February, even as RVNL is chasing a January 31 deadline . The Joka-Taratala system is now being upgraded with electronic interlocking (EI) signalling. EI installation on Taratala-Majerhat section, too, has been done.
