  • Kolkata: Following recommendations by the Bidhannagar Traffic Police, the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is planning to increase its electronic surveillance across New Town.

To the present 896 existing CCTV cameras that are operating at different locations of the township, the authorities now plan to install another 20 to 25 CCTV cameras in the parks in Action Area II and other new hangout zones.NKDA has initiated the process of engaging an agency to install and commission the CCTV cameras.

Residents have welcomed the move, saying that sporadic crimes had been reported in the township in the recent past and that increasing electronic surveillance will help in preventing any untoward incident. According to them, there are a few stretches, especially some pockets of Action Area II and III, which are not adequately lit and have limited public transport. These areas in particular need proper surveillance, they felt.

A number of CCTV cameras has already been installed at community markets and at the public-cycle sharing stations to keep check on miscreants. The cameras installed in New Town are of high-end technology. Some areas have box cameras that allow them to be designed as per requirements. There are bullet cameras as well, which are long and cylindrical in shape and are ideal for outdoor use. Bullet cameras have high-quality image resolution. There are also the PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) cameras that allow them to move left or right, up and down and even allow zooming of the lens.

NKDA had recently inaugurated the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) that serves as the nerve centre for keeping a watch on day-to-day management and operation of civic services through 24-hour, real-time CCTV monitoring. “The facility provides real-time data, enabling faster and informed decision-making by the authority,” said an official.
