• 2 more held in Bengal for attack on ED team

  • BASIRHAT: Two people were arrested on Sunday in connection with the January 5 attack on ED officers at Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, taking the total number of arrests in the case to four.

    Police said one of the accused - Sanjay Mondal, a resident of Sandeshkhali's Rampur - was picked up from a hideout at Bagdipara near Nazat in a raid early Sunday. The second, Ali Hossain Gharami of Minakhan, was arrested in Sandeshkhali's Kharberia.

    "The accused were identified from video footage of the incident. A raid is on to nab others involved," an police officer said. The two were remanded in judicial custody for a day by a Basirhat courtin the afternoon.

    Prime accused Sheikh Shahjahan is, however, still at large even nine days after the attack. A lookout circular has been issued for the Trinamool strongman, who is the party's Sandeshkhali Block-1 president and North 24 Parganas zila parishad karmadhyaksha (fisheries and animal resources)..

    Two accused - Mehboor Mollah and Sukamal Sardar - were arrested last week. According to local sources, all four accused are Shahjahan's close associates.

    Meanwhile, a case was registered on Sunday against some BJP functionaries, including state president Sukanta Majumdar, who had breached police barricades, violating Section 144 of CrPC, on January 11.

    They had been holding an agitation in front of Nazat police station, demanding the arrest of Sheikh Shahjahan.
