  • Kolkata: The state health department has invited private players to set up nursing institutes in government-run health facilities. Dr BC Roy Post Graduate Institute of Paediatric Sciences is the only teaching institute in Kolkata among the 16 state-run hospitals where the government has invited proposals for setting up nursing schools or colleges. Earlier the Bengal government took similar steps inviting private hospitals that did not have adequate clinical facilities to use government health units for the same for a fee.

The state health department has given 16 sites across the state which are government hospitals that have 300 beds and above. Interested private players can send proposals for developing the nursing institutes in these government hospitals where they can take in between 60 to 100 nursing students in a batch. The initial agreement will be for 10 years which can be extended for a further 10 years subsequently subject to a maximum cumulative 33 years.

While the final modalities are yet to be worked out, health officials said the government will generate revenue from this as private establishments using the government land and clinical facilities will pay charges to the government. This will also enhance the number of nurses in Bengal where there is scarcity of trained nurses, said the officials.

A meeting with interested organisations is expected to be held in the middle of next week after which online submission of bid forms will be opened up from January 24.
