  • Police on Sunday arrested two more persons in connection with the January 5 attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials in Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district while they were on their way to conduct searches at a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader a part of a probe into the ration scam case.

One of the accused, Sanjay Mandal, was arrested from a fishery in Nazat area, and the other, Ali Hossain Gharami, from Minakhan, both in North 24 Parganas district.

Police sources said that Gharami was arrested from Minakhan and Mandal was arrested from the Nazat area in the same district.

Till date, four persons have been arrested in connection with the attack on ED officials. Earlier, police had arrested two persons — Mehboob Mollah and Sukalam Sarkar, both residents of Akunjipara in Sandeshkhali. They were identified based on media footage of the attack on ED officials. They were sent to police custody for three days on Friday.

The prime accused, TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh whose house was raided by the ED, however, remains absconding.

The latest arrest comes a day after West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose asserted that lawlessness cannot be tolerated in the state and asked the TMC government to act on the Sandeshkhali incident.

Referring to the report sought from the state government over the Sandeshkhali incident Bose on Saturday said: “It is time for the government to act. What we want is action. I insist upon the report. Let it come. Otherwise, the law will take its own course. The lawlessness and tolerance of wrongdoing cannot be and will not be tolerated. The Constitution is there, the courts are there, the Governor is there, and the law is there. We will do whatever is required on the ground,” the Governor had said.

On Friday, the Governor had said that he was “convinced” by the explanation given by senior state government officials on the delay in arresting TMC leader Sheikh. “What they conveyed to me is the considered opinion of the state government on certain burning issues which are vexing us, particularly in the background of the harassment of the Enforcement Directorate. They have given me some valuable inputs since the investigation is going on, I would like to keep it confidential,” Bose had said.

The police have registered three FIRs in connection with the January 5 incident, including the one against ED officials.

In the FIR, registered on a complaint filed by the ED, Sheikh’s supporters – though not named — have been accused of attacking the agency officials and accompanying Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel. The ED, in its complaint, said that three of its officers were injured and had to be hospitalised, while their belongings like mobile phones, laptops, and wallets were stolen.
