  • KOLKATA: Bengal might feel robbed by the weather as bad light prevented any play on the final day forcing the Elite Group 'B' match against Uttar Pradesh to end in a draw in Kanpur on Monday. Laxmi Ratan Shukla's boys thus ended up with three points by virtue of taking the first-innings lead. But they could have collected more.

The hosts were a mere 50 runs ahead at 178 for four at stumps on the penultimate day, but the Bengal bowlers did not get a chance to try and bowl out UP early and go for an outright victory on the final day.

After being bowled out for 60 in the opening session of the first day, UP's second essay fightback was steered by skipper Nitish Rana who was unbeaten on 47. Bengal pacer Mohammad Kaif (4/15 and 3/72) was named the man of the match for bagging seven wickets in the match along with scoring a fighting unbeaten 45.

After two rounds of matches, Bengal are at fourth spot in the group with four points. They will next take on Chhattisgarh, who are at the second spot with 10 points, at home from Friday.

The 24-member team to be set up to detect fraudulent claims under the state’s Swasthya Sathi scheme will be called the programme management group. “The team of 24 will also have a vigilance officer and a statistical officer. All this is being done to strengthen the system and ensure maximum benefit for those in need of help,” a senior official explained. The scheme, launched in December 2016 by Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, offers a basic annual health coverage of Rs 5 lakh for every beneficiary family. More than 2.4 crore have enrolled for the scheme till December 2023.
