A sub-inspector of police died in a road accident in Jalpaiguri on Tuesday morning while he was trying to save a dog that had come in front of his two-wheeler.
Although he was rushed to hospital by one of his colleagues, he succumbed to injuries.
Sources said Karuna Kanta Roy, 49, who is from Tataiganj in Rajganj block of the district, was on his way to the district police lines to attend a parade.
While he was crossing the Hospitalpara area of the town on his motorcycle, a dog came in front. In a bid to save the animal, he lost control and the two-wheeler rammed into a road divider.
Roy, who was posted as officer-in-charge (monitoring cell) in the district police, suffered serious injuries.
At that time Subhasis Ghosh, the officer on special duty to the chief minister posted in Uttarkanya (the north Bengal branch secretariat in Siliguri), was out on a morning walk.
Ghosh, who is a resident of Jalpaiguri town, rushed Roy to Jalpaiguri Medical College and Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
“It is an unfortunate incident. We are carrying our necessary formalities,” said Arghya Sarkar, the inspector-in-charge of Kotwali police station.
