  • The Calcutta High Court Thursday rejected BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s plea seeking deferment of Mamata Banerjee’s ‘Sampriti Rally’ (Harmony Rally) on January 22. The bench of Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya, however, asked the state government to ensure that there is no breach of peace during the rally.

The bench said, “During the rally, no speech or utterances be made hurting the sentiments of… people belonging to a particular religion or sect and this shall be scrupulously followed. All persons participating in the rally must be sensitised. If violence happens, organisers must be held liable.”

Earlier, Adhikari had said, “Through the rally on January 22, she (Mamata Banerjee) is trying to disturb communal harmony in the state. I will request the Governor (C V Ananda Bose) to seek the deployment of Central forces in sensitive areas.”

On Monday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced her plans to hold the rally on January 22, which coincides with the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

She said, “Pran Pratishtha of Lord Ram is not our job. It is the job of seers and sadhus… What will we do by going to Ayodhya? As politicians, our job is to build infrastructure, I will do that.”

The rally to be held by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on January 22 will have people from all faiths and cover different shrines before culminating in Park Circus Maidan, a minority-dominated area in Kolkata. The chief minister added that similar rallies will be held by party workers in the districts.

On Thursday, after the high court gave the order, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, “This is a big slap for Suvendu Adhikari. The BJP wants to divide the society and that is why they are opposing the Sampriti rally. Mamata Banerjee has already said that this rally has got nothing to do with the Ram Mandir inauguration.”
