• Light rain extends winter chill in Kolkata; shallow fog to remain in south Bengal

  • Kolkata and its suburbs experienced light to scattered rain on Sunday, which extended the winter spell in south Bengal. The city, which recorded a minimum temperature of 15.2 degrees Celsius, is witnessing shallow fog in the early morning with a visibility of 500 m.

    “The shallow fog condition will remain for the next 4-5 days in south Bengal,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department. Shallow to dense fog is expected in districts such as Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, Purba Bardhaman and Paschim Bardhaman.

    “On Tuesday light rain is expected in the coastal region including Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Paschim Medinipur and Purba Medinipur. From Wednesday almost all the districts of south Bengal may experience rainfall,” added the official with IMD Kolkata.

    The likelihood of persistent light rainfall is mainly in Howrah, Purba Medinipur, South 24 Parganas, Purulia, Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur and Bankura. In Purulia, the minimum temperature is expected to touch 10.5 degrees Celsius. In areas such as Purba Bardhaman, Bishnupur, Bankura and Krishnanagar, the minimum temperature hovers around 11-12 degrees Celsius. Murshidabad might experience a night time temperature of 9.3 degrees Celsius.

    In north Bengal, no area other than Darjeeling is expected to receive rainfall or snowfall in the next two days. Darjeeling has witnessed a consistent dip in the minimum temperature to 2 degrees Celsius over the past few days.

    According to officials, Darjeeling will experience a lowest temperature of 2-4 degrees Celsius for the next one week with dense fog likely on the next two days. In Cooch Behar, Kalimpong, Siliguri and Malda, the lowest temperature is expected to drop to 9 degrees Celsius.
