• Kolkata colder than its coldest day record; minimum temp in Darjeeling drops to 3.80C

  • A day after it saw its coldest day of the winter season so far, Kolkata topped it with a new record as its minimum temperature dipped to 10.9 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. While the minimum temperature recorded at Dum Dum weather station was 10.9 degrees Celsius, at the Regional Meteorological Centre at Alipore it was 11.8 degrees Celsius.

    As shallow fog enveloped Kolkata, the Met office also predicted sporadic rains in the city on Wednesday. There is also a rain forecast for Howrah, Hooghly, Medinipur, Jhargram, Purba and Paschim Bardhman, and North and South 24 Parganas.

    Reeling under cold wave conditions and fog, Kolkata had reported a minimum temperature of to 12.1 degrees Celsius on Monday.

    The weather department has issued a fog alert for Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Malda, Uttar and Dakshin Dinajpur.

    Among districts, Darjeeling continued to be the coldest with a minimum temperature of 3.8 degree Celsius — a degree higher than Monday. Weather department official said there are chances of rain and snowfall over the next three days in Darjeeling. However, Kalimpong and other surrounding districts, are expected to remain dry during the period.

    In north Bengal, other districts which recorded low temperatures were Siliguri (6.8 degrees Celsius), Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri (7 degrees Celsius) and, Kalimpong (8 degrees Celsius).

    In south Bengal, Purulia was the coldest at 5.8 degrees Celsius. Other districts in the region which saw low mercury levels were Murshidabad (6.1 degrees Celsius) and Bankura (8 degrees Celsius), weather department officials said.
