• Kolkata school sports meet celebrates global festivals

  • KOLKATA: Delhi Public School Newtown's sports meet, a three-day event, showcased the prowess, sportsmanship and camaraderie of students. The event, from Dec 21 to 23, transformed the school into a hub of spirited competition.

    The school band set the tone for each day and the flag was hoisted, followed by felicitation of chief guests - Jagjit Kaur Singh, director, Little Angels School; Indrani Sanyal, principal, Delhi Public School Megacity; Aseem Mahajan, medical superintende-nt, Tata Memorial Hospital; Gianshri Dutta, philanthropic NGO worker; Mitali Biswas, film-maker, social activist and editor of 'Protibidhan', a magazine dedicated to women's rights and movements.

    In the welcome speech, principal Sonali Sen emphasized the importance of sports in holistic education.

    On the first day, nursery students exhibited their creativity while depicting festivals from around the world. The day also had fun activities, including races. LKG students embraced the theme of Christmas while those from UKG showcased Indian festivals. The second day had track-and-field events for students from classes III to VI, which were punctuated by special displays of yoga, karate and callisthenic drill. On the last day, students from classes VII to XII competed in races, relays and other field events.

    The school had also invited members and children from various NGOs, including Sukanya Home and Poribesh Foundation, and organised special races for them. The involvement of parents and teachers in the events reinforced the idea that sports can be a unifying force for the entire school community.
