  • KOLKATA: Brace for spells of light rain in Kolkata and other parts of south Bengal on Wednesday. The Met office has predicted rain between 5mm and 10mm for the city.

The minimum in Kolkata scaled down further to 11.8 °Celsius on Tuesday, two notches below normal, making it the coldest winter day this year. It was 12.1 °Celsius on Monday.

"We are expecting spells of light rain in Kolkata on Wednesday. This is due to wind discontinuity over Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh region along with moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal," said GK Das, director (weather) at Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata.

This will be the second time the city will be encountering winter rain. Last week too a cyclonic circulation had caused light rain in Kolkata. The city has already started getting the easterly wind that brings in the warm and moist air from the sea.

While the night temperature dipped further the maximum rose up. From 19.8 °Celsius it climbed to 22.1 °Celsius on Tuesday. But since it was four notches below normal the chill factor was intact in Kolkata.

"Because of the moisture incursion the minimum is expected to rise by around three degrees from Wednesday. The maximum will also rise slightly. While we expect the mercury to dip again once the cloud mass moves away the fall will not be sharp," said Das.

Rain has been forecast for Howrah, North 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Burdwan, Midnapore, Jhargram and Bankura.
