  • Kolkata: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee met governor CV Ananda Bose at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday for 45 minutes. Emerging out of the meeting, the CM said it was a “good meeting” in which several bills were discussed. She said she would be visiting Raj Bhavan again on January 26.

The last CM-governor meeting, held on Dec 4, had led to a stand-off in the apex court with the Bengal government saying that Raj Bhavan did not keep the promises made to the chief minister on the VC-appointment issue.

Along with this, there is a growing uncertainty on whether the governor will address the budget session of the state assembly, which is scheduled to start on Feb 1.

Before the meeting, the governor was asked on the apex court impasse. He said, “I respect my constitutional colleague, the chief minister. Whatever promise I have made, if at all, will be honoured within the framework of law. Let law take its course here also. Matter is with the Supreme Court. Once a decision comes, I will obey it in letter and spirit. I respect my colleague. I will not let her down. Promise is a promise, but law is law.”

The chief minister did not respond to questions on whether she broached the VC-appointment issue at the meeting.

Ahead of the budget session, she might have discussed various bills that are going to be introduced and the pending bills, sources said.
