  • Kolkata: The body of a 58-year-old radiologist was found floating in a local water body less than 2 km from his residence in Bosepukur, Kasba, on Wednesday. The doctor — Subhasish Roy — had gone missing from his residence on January 22, after which his wife had lodged a missing complaint at Kasba police station.

According to police joint commissioner (crime & organization) Syed Waquar Raza, the victim had developed a brain tumour a little over a year ago. Though he was operated on, his family claimed he was under acute depression. He was currently attached with a hospital near Joka.

“Prima facie, the postmortem revealed the victim died due to drowning. We are yet to conclude if he died accidentally or it was suicide,” said DC (Jadavpur) Bidisha Kalita.

With the recovery of medicine strips on the body, cops did not rule out the possibility that he might have taken some medicine before jumping into the water. Sources said the medicines may be sent for forensic tests to check if they are sleeping pills. No suicide note has been recovered from the victim’s body or his residence.

The inquest proceedings have started. The investigation will include the costs incurred during the victim’s treatment and whether that had had an impact on him.

According to sources, the victim had left his Bosepukur Road residence and travelled towards the Kasba mall, and went behind it. “His body was floating in a pond near the Ramkrishna Club at Rajdanga Chakraborty Para around 8.25 am,” said Kalita.

The police said they are speaking to regular morning walkers and evening walkers, his family members, as well as looking at CCTV footage to reconstruct the chain of events. Cops are also tracking the mobile phone location of the victim. So far though, no complaint of foul play has been reported, said senior officers at Lalbazar.

In Kolkata, 140 people ended their lives after suffering from mental illness in 2021 and three due to prolonged illness. In 2022, 48 were driven to suicide due to mental illness and zero suicides were attributed to prolonged illness.
