  • Kolkata: A day after Satyarup Siddhanta, who was beaten up at the app-cab zone at the Howrah station, Golabari police has started a probe based on an FIR registered by the mountaineer. Eastern Railway has decided to post RPF jawans near the cab-zone to prevent harassment of passengers.

Golabari police on Wednesday registered a case against the driver and his aides based on Siddhanta’s complaint. The cops have slapped sections pertaining to voluntarily causing hurt, restraining the complainant wrongfully and intimidating him. An officer with the Howrah City police said they will go through the CCTV footage and try to identify persons involved in the incident. “We have already questioned a few people,” he said. Uber has already blocked the driver from accessing the app’s services.

“Apart from the driver, there were three-four people who shoved me. Police have assured that steps will be taken so that the offenders are punished,” Siddhanta said.

Siddhanta, who scaled Mt Everest in 2016, was roughed up at 5.20am on Tuesday when he refused to pay a parking fee of Rs 285. The driver and his aides near parking lot 3 cancelled the trip after thrashing him and intimidated him.

Sanjeev Kumar, divisional railway manager at Howrah station, said that CCTV cameras are installed in the area and they have already gone through the footage. “There will be an RPF surveillance so that no such incidents are repeated. We are in coordination with the city police,” he said, adding that the display board at the app-cab zone will be made more prominent.

State minister Arup Roy said has asked police to increase patrolling in the area. “We cannot expect everyone to reach Golabari police station, 1.5 kms from the Howrah Station, to lodge a complaint,” Roy said.
