  • KOLKATA: Doctors at Institute of Child Health (ICH) Kolkata have picked up the paint and brush to infuse funds into the trust run hospital so that it can care for a higher number of ailing children. Their art works will be displayed along with paintings for renowned artists during an exhibition this weekend. The proceeds will go towards expansion of the hospital for children.A brand-new building that can accommodate more patients than the present building is being constructed.

One of the foremost children specialty hospitals in independent India the Park Circus institute currently is a 220-bedded hospital and is also a teaching hospital with post graduate courses. The new building, a G+8 structure will have an additional 300 beds along with the latest machines and technologies. Run by a trust on charity the hospital is one of the sought because of quality care at nominal cost. Many doctors attached with institute

“With time there is an increasing number of children who need medical attention calling for expansion of the hospital,” said professor of paediatric Surgery Parthapratim Gupta, who has great passion for painting. Two of his paintings will be part of the fund driving exhibition.

Paediatrician Sushmita Banerjee had to give up her childhood love for the canvas due to professional demands. The Covid-19 pandemic allowed her to pursue her passion again.

“ICH is an institute where parents bring their children to get quality medical care at affordable cost. My contribution may be small, but I feel nice that it will be part of something big,” said Banerjee who deals with paediatric kidney diseases.

Other doctors whose painting will rub shoulders with that of the likes of Suvaprasanna Bhattacharjee in the ‘Art for a Cause ‘exhibition on January 27 and 28 at Gallery Gold include Amit Barua, Bhaswati Acharya, BK Manocha, Debjani Gupta, Jayati Sengupta and Sumita Saha.

“The institute started with 50 beds in 1956 which has now grown to 220 beds. But due to high patient load the space has become a big constraint. The new building will not only allow us to accommodate more children but bring in new technologies and machines. We are thankful to the leading artists and our doctors for coming forward to drive funds through this exhibition,” said veteran paediatrician Apurba Ghosh director ICH.

The target to complete the new block is by 2015 end. Additional specialties like paediatric kidney transplant will begin at the institute from the new building. Various fund drive activities are on so that the project meets the deadline.Explore Your Financial Landscape with Personalized Credit Insights.
