• Four interstate robbers sentenced to life imprisonment

  • KOLKATA: Four interstate robbers - arrested for carrying out a daylight robbery at a top jewellery chain store at Ranaghat on August 29 last year have been sentenced to life imprisonment under IPC sections pertaining to 395 (dacoity), 412 (Dishonestly receiving property stolen in the commission of a dacoity) and 120 (criminal conspiracy), stated special public prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee.

    Each of the accused have also been fined Rs 30,000. The sentence was awarded by the additional district judge, fast track court (first court) at Ranaghat. The conviction had taken place on Wednesday. The accused are likely to appeal at a higher court, hinted defence lawyers.

    The accused - Kundan Kumar Yadav, Raju Kumar Paswan, Rikki Kumar Paswan, Chhattu Kumar – had been convicted under IPC sections 395 (Punishment for dacoity), 397 (Robbery, or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) and 307 (attempt to murder) along with 412 (Dishonestly receiving property stolen in the commission of a dacoity), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) 120 (criminal conspiracy) and & 25/27 Arms Act.

    The trial, which started on November 29, was completed in less than two months. The charges were framed on November 23. The entire case has thus been completed within nearly six months from the day of the incident with 35 witnesses named by the prosecution.

    Kundan, a wanted criminal from Bihar, is also one of the main accused in the murder of Asansol politician Raju Jha who was shot dead at Shaktigarh on the highway last year. A fifth accused Manikant Yadav died in the hospital after getting hit by a bullet during the exchange of fire by the police on August 29 last year.
