• Man gets six years in jail for mom’s death

  • Kolkata: A 32-year-old man, Rakesh Dutta, has been convicted for the death of his mother, Namita Dutta (50), at Purba Putiary in Regent Park in Feb, 2020. He was sentenced to six years in prison. The court of the fourth additional district judge at Alipore convicted him of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

    Public prosecutor Tapas Dey Chowdhury said the day Namita had died, neighbours had heard a fight between the two. A few hours later, Rakesh told a neighbour his mother had died. He claimed she had suffered cardiac arrest but a postmortem showed it was a homicide. Rakesh was arrested. Defence lawyer Subhomoy Samaddar told the court Rakesh had called a doctor immediately after his mother lost consciousness. He also pointed at the efforts Rakesh had made to save her, which got him fewer number of years in jail.
