  • Locals staging a protest over the death of a teenaged boy clashed with police and set a motorcycle on fire in Kolkata’s port area of Metiabruz on Saturday night. The family of the deceased, aged 16, whose body was found hanging in a house on Friday, has alleged that he was died after being beaten up by some people whom he owed money, the police said.

Two police personnel were injured during the protest, it is learnt. Three youths, identified as Sheikh Shakeel Ahmed, alias Rocky, Sheikh Sabir Ahmed, alias Rony and Sheikh Sohail Ahmed, alias Rohan have been arrested in connection with the death.

During the protest in Metiabruz’s Pilkhana locality, the police resorted to lathicharge to bring the situation under control. The motorbike that was set on fire belonged to the police. The situation remained tense till Sunday morning.

Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel were deployed in the area to control the situation. The unrest took place after the teenager’s family received the report of post-mortem on the body, mentioning suicide as the reason behind death. The boy worked as a tailor in a shop owned by one of the accused who has been arrested.

His family members claimed that the victim had borrowed Rs 1,000 from the accused and promised to return it. The family members along with locals held the protest with the body when it was brought back after post-mortem, demanding stringent action against the “culprits”.

A relative of the teenaged boy said, “He was a good boy and was not at fault. They took him along and killed him. The suicide angle is nothing but eyewash.”

A local resident, who witnessed the protest, said, “Many people were injured in the police lathicharge. The protesters also pelted the police with stones.”

A case of murder was registered after the protest and a probe is on, an official said. The family has demanded a second post-mortem on the body with videography.
