• Nagar Bandhu scheme: KMC to set deadline for doorstep services

  • Kolkata: Municipal commissioner Binod Kumar has asked civic officials in boroughs to ensure time-bound delivery of services under its Nagar Bandhu scheme, which promises doorstep delivery of services to senior citizens and the differently abled. It was launched on January 1.

The services offered under the scheme include conversion from the current property tax regime to unit area-based assessment, mutation of properties and correction in death or birth certificates.

“At present, the civic body is offering services like delivery of mutation certificates and property tax-related issues,” said a civic official.

Civic officials said they had received positive feedback and appreciation from citizens on the services. Somesh Dasgupta (89), a resident of Santoshpur area, has sent a mail to senior civic officials appreciating the role of Santanu Biswas, a deputy assessor-collector, and Ankan Sarkar, inspector of the KMC assessment department, for delivering a mutation certificate at his doorstep in record time.

To avail services, a citizen has to take help of a Chatbot (8335999111) and mention the kind of service he/she wants KMC to deliver. “We will scan the request and accordingly ask our officials to contact the applicant. Once the applicant is contacted and the nature of grievance is known, our team may need to visit homes of the applicants and deliver the services,” said a civic official.

“Instead of calling the senior citizens to our office, our men will go to their places,” said mayor Firhad Hakim.

A KMC official in the assessment department said the officials were asked to keep a workforce ready to render services to the citizens at their doorsteps. “We are keeping ready a dedicated workforce hoping that the doorstep services will become popular as the citizens are expected to avail of such services as they don’t have to pay the middlemen an exorbitant amount for simple services,” said a KMC revenue department official. At the same time, he expressed hope that the civic body would also benefit out of the system by mopping up good revenue.
