  • Kolkata: Following demands of residents, New Town Action Area III is all set to get its first community market complex. The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has initiated the process to engage an agency to construct a G+2 market complex building near Uniworld City housing complex in AA IIIC.

New Town now has 12 community markets in Action Area I and II.

The authorities have pegged a cost estimate of around Rs 6.5 crore for setting up the market. The agency that will be engaged for the job will need to complete the project within one and half years.

Action Area III of New Town has around seven large gated communities, including Sukhobristi, Uniworld City and Rosedale. Presently, there is only a hawker rehabilitation market located close to Sukhobristi but unlike Action Area I or II, till date there is no G+2 market complex in Action Area III.

It was during the meeting with resident welfare associations of Action Area III that NKDA officials were told that the area was yet to have a community market complex that will host different shops like groceries, fish and meat, medicines and a community hall.

“Having a community market like the ones in Action Area I and II will be very helpful. Also, similar to some of the NKDA markets, it will be very beneficial if a community hall facility is set up inside the community market,” said Mainak Kanrar, a resident of Sukhobristi housing complex.

“A community market for Action Area III is the need of the hour,” said Samaresh Das of New Town forum and News.
