• Zero waste management in school campuses
    Times of India | 1 February 2024
  • Kolkata: The International Society of Waste Management, Air and Water, headed by JU waste management expert Sadhan Ghosh, has partnered with 10 schools in the city and surrounding districts to launch a first-of-its-kind initiative in the state called "Catch them Young - Zero Waste Management in School Campus." Under this initiative, both students and teachers will be trained on how to adopt solid, wet, and e-waste bins, as well as how to recycle waste, in order to establish a waste management system within the schools for segregating and recycling waste.

"We have already introduced this initiative in two schools and two colleges in Meghalaya. Now, we are focusing on West Bengal. Ten school authorities have agreed to participate in the initiative so far. Three different colored waste bins will be installed in all the schools to raise awareness and provide training to the students. They will utilize these waste bins to segregate waste and store it on a regular basis," said Ghosh.

"We want the students to understand the value of dry waste. We will collaborate with recyclers to recycle the waste, and we will also conduct workshops for the students to learn about the types of products that can be made from recycled dry waste and how they can be marketed," Ghosh added.

"In addition to our own funds and funding from the respective schools, we are also approaching municipal wards and the industry for financial support. Our target is to involve around one lakh students from West Bengal and Meghalaya in this initiative by 2025," Ghosh concluded.
