  • Kolkata: After Tuesday’s trolley run through the Bowbazar cave-in zone, the CRS team on Wednesday inspected the Esplanade-Howrah Maidan section. The safety regulator team’s report will pave the way for their chief’s inspection next week.

The East-West Metro is going through repeated safety inspections so that the Esplanade-Howrah Maidan section, which has missed the Dec deadline, could be launched soon.TOI had reported on Wednesday that the CRS team’s positive report on the cave-in zone’s readiness for empty rake movement will be followed by the visit of the chief commissioner of railway safety (CCRS) next week, followed by the mandatory safety nod for launching East-West Metro’s under-river operations.

The CRS team on Wednesday started with trolley inspections of the twin tunnels (including the 520m under-river stretch) of the Esplanade-Howrah Maidan section. They also visited Mahakaran, Howrah and Howrah Maidan stations as well. The 4.8km Esplanade-Howrah Maidan stretch is dotted by Esplanade, Mahakaran, Howrah station and the terminal Howrah Maidan station.

Wednesday’s inspection was relatively hassle-free compared to the one on Tuesday, which involved a trolley-run along the east-bound tunnel of the subsidence-ridden Esplanade-Sealdah section.
