  • A day after the ED arrested JMM president Hemant Soren, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Thursday that Opposition leaders were being put behind bars ahead of the Lok Sabha polls and that if she were sent to jail she would somehow come out of it.

“Sobaike bhoy dekhie jail e poore dileo, amake jodi jail e poore dyay, jail theke phuto hoe berie asbo. Mone rakhben, nirbachone jetar jonno sobaike jail e poorche (All are put behind bars by way of intimidation. If I am being put behind bars as well then I will somehow come out of it. Bear in mind that to win the election, all are being sent to jail),” she said.

Soren resigned as Jharkhand chief minister before ED officials arrested him in a land scam case. The arrest came after seven hours of questioning at his home in Ranchi on Wednesday.

Commenting on the matter without naming anyone, Banerjee said, “Are we all thieves and they are all saints? They are the biggest of the thieves. Those who scream the loudest are the guilty ones. Empty vessels make the most sound. Today they are in power and that is why they are roaming around with agencies. Tomorrow they will not be in power and everything will fall flat.”

It may be recalled that the CBI and the ED are investigating multiple scam cases in West Bengal. Former ministers Partha Chatterjee and Jyoti Priya Mallick were arrested in connection with the School Service Commission recruitment scam and the ration distribution scam, respectively. TMC heavyweight Anubrata Mondal is lodged in Tihar Jail for his alleged involvement in a cattle smuggling case.
