  • KOLKATA: A groom heading for wedding survived a fire scare on Wednesday night when a fire broke out at the SUV he was riding on VIP Road.

    The groom and his relatives were travelling from his Lake Town home to the wedding venue in Teghoria when the fire broke out around 8.30pm at Dum Dum Park – VIP Road crossing.

    The groom and other family members had managed to get out of the car while it was in flames and the front portion of the car was gutted within minutes.While firemen, locals and cops worked on dousing the fire another team of traffic cops called a local car and set off the groom to the wedding venue so that he could reach there on time.

    “The groom and the family members were tense as they were running late for the wedding. We arranged for a car and sent off the groom and two of his companions in the car. We had also arranged for another car for the other relatives who were in the car. None were injured,” said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City police. The car was hired from a car rental agency, the officer added.

    Cops said, while firemen and a fire tender was dousing the blaze traffic on the airport bound flank had to be stopped for 20 minutes before they could tow the car to a side and resume usual traffic movement.
