  • Kolkata: A 40-year-old resident of Habra in North 24 Parganas, who was seriously injured after a tall tree fell on him inside one of the clusters of Purbachal housing complex in Salt Lake on Jan 26, succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital on Friday.

The local Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials said that the victim had been running a meat shop at the place for nearly the last 15 years.

“The tree that had fallen on him was a dead coconut tree which was at the place for a long time. The local civic authorities had once tried to chop off the tree but had faced resistance from a few residents,” said a civic official.

The victim had suffered a fracture on his spinal cord and underwent a surgery.

He was about to undergo a second surgery but did not recover, said hospital sources.

Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation officials said that they regularly undertake tree trimming work as and where required but often face resistance from locals.
