• Accused blind student’s plea to JU

  • Kolkata: The lawyer of a blind student at Jadavpur University, who has been blamed for the death of Renaisa Das, a second-year English blind student, on Friday wrote to the university, saying the accused had been arbitrarily debarred from the campus without giving him the opportunity to be heard. He appealed to withdraw the debarment.

“The prohibitory notice... infringes my client’s right to education and makes his stay at the hostel vulnerable, which is inherently inhuman and unbecoming of an education institution. The prohibitory notice even before the commencement of enquiry is unlawful...” said the lawyer’s letter.

Registrar Snehamanju Basu denied receiving the letter.

JU on Wednesday had decided the ICC would probe the case and the accused—the student and a research scholar— should stay away from the campus till the probe ended.

The ICC began the probe on Friday and questioned the student for five hours. He has been called again on Monday.
