  • An eight-year-old boy who was missing for around a week was found dead in Kamarhati in North 24-Parganas district on Saturday. Police said the child’s body was recovered from a pond and his hands and feet were tied. “A piece of cloth was stuffed into its mouth. A missing diary was lodged with the police on January 30,” a police official said.

Following the incident, local residents had blocked a road in Kamarhati in protest. Opposition parties had also criticised the Trinamool Congress-led government over the law and order situation in West Bengal.

The ruling TMC has called the incident “unfortunate”.

“Any incident is unfortunate but if the police were not capable then how so many problems would get resolved. National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data shows that crime incidents are way higher in BJP-ruled states than Bengal. Bengal is a safe place. A few stray incidents take place and it’s very unfortunate but we believe the police will solve the case and the accused persons will be behind the bars. Bengal’s law and order situation is far better than other places,” said TMC MP Santanu Sen.
