  • The budget session of the West Bengal Assembly started on Monday amid tight security arrangements. The entry and exit gates were monitored by police and vehicles of MLAs were thoroughly checked.

The decision to beef up the security was taken in the wake of last year’s security breach at Parliament in New Delhi when two people jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors’ gallery and shouted slogans, triggering chaos in the House.

State finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya will present the state budget on Thursday. The budget session will continue till February 17.

Meanwhile, the proceedings of the first day of the budget session were adjourned for the day after obituary references to public figures who passed away recently.

As soon as the House assembled, West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Bandyopadhyay read out the names of noted personalities who passed away recently which included former state minister and CPI(M) leader Narayan Biswas, singer and former TMC MLA Anup Ghosal, former CPI(M) MLA Maharani Konar, former CPI(M) MLA Mir Quasem Mondal, renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Ustad Rashid Khan, poet Debarati Mitra and two others.

In his condolence message, the Speaker mentioned the contributions made by the personalities in their respective fields. He then adjourned the House till Tuesday morning.

State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chatterjee told mediapersons that as the winter session was adjourned sine die and not prorogued, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose’s address was not required. It is a norm that the budget session of the state Assembly begins with the Governor’s address and that too on the first day of the session.
